Carnival in Montevideo, The Llamadas and the Rhythm of Candombe

Carnival in Montevideo is one of the most anticipated celebrations of the year, and within this cultural feast, the Llamadas stand out as a unique event that captures the essence of our identity. Every February, the streets come alive with music, dance, and the contagious energy of the comparsas.

The Llamadas have their roots in the African influence on our culture and are celebrated in the Palermo neighborhood, where comparsas parade with drums, colorful costumes, and overflowing joy. This year, we were fortunate to experience the event firsthand, enjoying the great atmosphere alongside some of our students. It was heartwarming to see their excitement as they immersed themselves in the local culture.

Participating in the Llamadas is an experience that goes beyond being a mere spectator. The passion that the groups put into their performances is palpable, and each comparsa strives to stand out with its unique style. The competition is friendly, but it also reflects the pride each group feels for its cultural heritage.

As we walked among the crowd, we could feel the connection between people. Laughter, hugs, and sharing a good drink made this event something special. There’s no better place to experience Carnival than in the streets of Montevideo, surrounded by friends, students, and strangers who become party companions.

So, if you have the chance to be here during Carnival, don’t miss the Llamadas. It’s a moment to celebrate our roots, enjoy the music, and, above all, share the joy that unites us as Uruguayans.

Take a look at our Llamadas video here to experience what we enjoyed at the event.
